Between the Sprocket Holes

For June 27 Through 29, 2025
All Times Eastern Daylight

My viewing recommendations for Thursday, June 26th, were published on LinkedIn.  I’ve learned my lesson, Sis.
For Friday, June 27th, Turner Classic Movies offers up not just good entertainment, but one of my favourites.
TCM is Channel 82 on Spectrum.
6:45 p. m. “Jewel Robbery” (1932)  A jewel thief--and not just any jewel thief, but William Powell--falls for a tycoons’s wife (Kay Francis) in Vienna. The movie is what it claims. Funny but no “Trouble In Paradise”.

Must See TCM 8:00 p. m. “The Lady Eve” (1941) Written and directed by the apotheotic Preston Sturges. It’s about love. It’s about family. It’s about gambling. It’s about snakes. Henry Fonda isn’t peculiar, he’s a scientist who ignores the warnings of bodyguard William Demarest, and falls for cardsharp Barbara Stanwyck. Also with Charles Coburn, Eugene Palette and the Sturges repertoire players. Watch the doggone movie!
And speaking of doggone, stick around and catch, at 11:30 p. m., “The Dogway Melody” (1930) This Dogville musical short is a spoof of “The Broadway Melody.” A top dog producer is in heat for his leading lady canine. Created by the eternal Jules White and Zion Myers. If you want to know nearly every way in which Hollywood harmed an animal, then stay up for this. Of course, that’s the only way this satire could work well.  Yeah...

Movies!
Available on channel 5.2 over your digital antenna, Spectrum channel 1250 and click on thelink to find out
Where to Watch Movies!
8:00 p. m. “Mystery on Monster Island” (1981) I was ready to suggest this and then I watched a YouTube review. The only novelty about this movie may be the use of full-size dinosaur puppets, which anyway had been done before. According to the schedule, “A young couple find themselves shipwrecked on a remote island populated by countless prehistoric creatures (I counted them) and gold-hunting bandits.” I don’t know which side actors Terence Stamp and Peter Cushing are on, but the latter is probably hunting for a new franchise.
Comet
Available on channels 2.5 and 55.5 over your digital antenna. Not available on Spectrum because they suck lemons. Click on the link for more info.

If you’re out at the clubs or kept awake with a guilty conscience catch the 2:00 a. m. screening of “The Final Countdown” (1980) A time warp takes the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, her captain (Kirk Douglas) and crew back to Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Advised by Martin Sheen, James Farentino and Katharine Ross, the Captain must decide whether he will defend his country.
Saturday, June 28th
At 8:00 p. m., Movies! offers up Robert Altman’s incredible “M*A*S*H” (1970) An American parable about the rule-breaking geniuses of the 4077th. Yes, a monumental cast.  Roger Bowen played Henry Blake and died one day after McLean Stevenson.  “Hello, Larry” indeed.

TCM has an evening of darkest Noir and colourful neo-Noir.
At 8:00 it’s Billy Wilder’s “Double Indemnity” followed at 10:00 by Roman Polanski’s “Chinatown.”
If you’ve never heard of these films, then you need to take the gas pipe.

As if the choice wasn’t tough enough, Comet presents “Galaxy Quest” (1999), also at 8:00 p. m. This hilariously excellent send-up of the “Star Trek” phenomenon is equally fond and ferocious. The stars ad astra per astera are Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub and Sam Rockwell.
Sunday, June 29th
Movies! presents its slate of Films Noir.
9:40 p. m. “Cry of the City” (1948) According to the schedule, “Two childhood friends are on the opposite sides of the law, with the one trying to recover stolen jewels before escaping the country.” Stars are the smokey voiced duo Victor Mature and Richard Conte with Debra Paget before the mascara.
11:45 p. m. “The Racket ” (1951) Two irresistible men, each on opposite sides of the law, find the one woman who can resist them both. Starring Robert Mitchum, Lizabeth Scott and Robert Ryan

TCM offers at 10:00 p. m. “King Solomon’s Mines” (1950). The full colour version of colonialists searching for a mythical cache of jewels, but instead the Man in the Yellow Hat (Stewart Granger) finds a friendly young chimp.  No, wait...
Stars Deborah Kerr, Deborah Kerr, Deborah Kerr.

Enjoy your weekend’s fun entertainment itinerary.
Until Next Time, remember to look for the Universe you’ll find... Between the Sprocket Holes.
